In 1962, at the age of 15, Paul visited the childhood home of his father in the small town of Carnegie, Pennsylvania. In the attic of his grandmother's house, he found a treasure of old photographic developer, developing trays, and negatives that his father had taken during his high school years in the late 1930's.

Pic2 Paul asked his father how prints were made from the negatives, and his father helped him to set up a little darkroom using the chemicals and printing paper left over from nearly 25 years earlier. There, in the attic of his grandmother, Paul made his first photographic print. That was to launch a lifetime of photographic endeavors.

While studying photography at Santa Monica College in the mid 1960's, Paul joined his friend, Roger, working for a local photography studio in West Los Angeles. Owned by Frank and Dottie Rogers, Rogers' Photography covered the weekend swim and track meets of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) throughout the greater Los Angeles area. At the same time, Paul and his father ran a side business shooting game films for local high school and college teams.

In 1968 Paul moved to Portland, Oregon, where he was employed at Photo Art Commercial Studios for six years. In 1974, after competing against over one hundred applicants, he was accepted into an Ophthalmic Photography fellowship at Devers Eye Clinic of Good Samaritan Hospital. After completion of the 18 month program under the direction of Richard G. Chenoweth, MD and Carl Kittelson, Paul moved to Iowa to assume the position of Director of Diagnostic Imaging at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Pic1 In 1997 Paul was invited by sports photographer and friend Debbie Saucedo to shoot the NFL Pro Bowl in Honolulu, Hawaii. His enthusiasm for sports photography was rekindled, and he began photographing football games for The University of Iowa in 1998. Since then he has contributed thousands of photographs to HawkeyeSports.com, and his images have been seen in programs, magazines, newspapers, and web sites.

As a response to the growing number of requests to see more of Paul's images, this web site was initiated in 2004. Paul continues his work in Ophthalmology while he and Cindy cover Hawkeye Football and take every opportunity to photograph the works of nature.
